How to clean and look after your jewellery

There are many things to consider when buying a new piece of jewellery and one of the most important aspects to consider, which was brought to the fore during Covid, is how to clean and look after your jewellery. With the need to sanitize one’s hands regularly during this period, many people were concerned about the impact that hand sanitizer can have on jewellery. Jewellery in general can be susceptible to the build-up of residue and damage if not looked after correctly but do not be too alarmed as below we will walk you through the process of ensuring your jewellery continues to look as good as new.

How should you protect and look after your jewellery?

  • You should always remove your jewellery when you are washing dishes. The water and dishwashing liquids used when washing dishes can be harmful to your jewellery and reduce its durability as well as its sparkling shine.
  • There are instances where it is advised for you not to wear your jewellery to protect it and prolong its lifespan. You should always take off all your pieces of jewellery before encountering any water, that being showering, bathing, or swimming. Any contact with the water and chemicals used in these activities can cause gradual damage to your jewellery over time.
  • You should try not to wear jewellery when exercising, playing a sport, or going to the gym. These strenuous activities could cause damage to the precious metals or gemstones used in jewellery over time. Jewellery pieces made of materials such as copper and brass are also not able to withstand the effects of sweat and as such can corrode over time. Thus, it is strongly advised to remove all jewellery prior to taking part in any of these activities.
  • Your jewellerys’ lifespan can be compromised if you wear it to bed every night. During your sleep, your jewellery is at more risk of wear and tear and being tarnished than during the day. This is because jewellery such as necklaces and bracelets can stretch or be crushed during your sleep. It is therefore recommended to remove and place your jewellery in a separate jewellery box before going to bed. We recommend using the Mark Solomon Jewellers box which your piece of jewellery came in.
  • Jewellery is very delicate and precious and thus you should be careful with what your jewellery comes into contact with. You should ensure your jewellery is not exposed to harmful chemicals including perfume, hairspray, and any lotions.

Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning before leaving home and the first thing you take off in the evening when you return home. This will ensure your jewellery is well protected and taken care of which will increase its lifespan and allow it to shine and sparkle at its very best for years to come.

How should you clean your jewellery?

Cleaning your jewellery is as important as the decision to buy the jewellery. The process of regularly cleaning your jewellery will ensure that it will always look as good as the day you bought it.
The safest way to clean your jewellery is to create a cleaning solution of warm water and mild dish soap. You should not use any detergents or harmful chemicals in the cleaning process as this could cause more harm than good. Once you have created your cleaning solution, you should place your piece of jewellery in it and allow it to soak for approximately 30 minutes. This will allow for any dirt build-up to be loosened which will make it easier for you to clean.

You should use a soft-bristled brush or a microfiber cloth to carefully clean your jewellery. This process should not be done vigorously to ensure that your jewellery is not scratched while cleaning it. The soft bristles of the brush are also beneficial as they can clean hard-to-reach places. Once completed, ensure you rinse off any residue left over by the cleaning solution. To do this, use a glass of water and carefully rinse your piece of jewellery. This is done to ensure that if your piece of jewellery has any loose stones, the risk of losing them is minimal.

To dry your piece of jewellery once cleaned use a microfiber cloth to either pat the ring dry or simply place the ring on the cloth to allow it to dry on its own.

The best advice when it comes to cleaning your jewellery is to get into the habit of doing it regularly. This will allow the jewellery to continue to shine and sparkle as well as keep it looking as good as new for many years to come.
