Whether for a birthday gift, anniversary surprise or simply to spoil yourself, celebrate with sapphires this September!

September’s birthstone is the sapphire. Traditionally known as blue, sapphires in fact come in a rainbow spectrum of every colour under the sun, meaning there’s one of these precious gems out there for everyone! Not only are sapphires the birthstone of September, but they are also the gem used to commemorate both 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.
Colour me Pretty
Sapphire is part of the corundum family, and depending on the presence of certain trace elements within the gem, comes in a variety of colours. These include blue, white, pink, yellow, orange, green and even rare purple. Moreover, there are different shades and hues of these colours, ranging from pale and light to deep, vibrant and bright. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphires are durable, glittering gems, especially when cut well. This makes them a brilliant choice for coloured stone engagement rings, as they can withstand daily wear and tear better than most alternatives.
White sapphires also make for a price-conscious alternative to diamonds, saving on cost whilst still being a natural and precious gem. At Mark Solomon Jewellers we have some of the best quality white sapphires in South Africa.
Blue sapphires have been famously associated with royalty for hundreds of years. One of the most well-known blue sapphires is the one Princess Diana wore in her engagement ring; a 12ct oval with a halo of white diamonds. Now passed on to Kate Middleton, this design set such a trend, making it the most popular style for sapphire engagement rings to date.
If classic blue is what you’re after, our sapphire and diamond ring will bring royal elegance to your every day.

If you’d prefer a different colour, how about pink? Among our latest creations at Mark Solomon Jewellers are an array of tennis and fancy-link bracelets featuring sparkling diamonds and beautiful pink sapphires.
